Bats are remarkable but undervalued mammals. They are capable of catching flying insects in total darkness and living as much as 25 years. Modern technology gives us a greater insight into their lives but much more remains to be discovered. West Sussex is a stronghold of most of our 18 species, including the rarest. This presentation will illustrate their fascinating lives, the issues they face in the modern world and what we can do to help them.
Nik Knight, is a retired zoologist and teacher who devotes much of his time to the study and conservation of bats. He is a member of the Bat Conservation Trust, the Sussex Bat Group, the Chairman of the Hampshire Bat Group and the Hampshire County Bat Recorder. Many of the regular bat surveys he conducts are in and around Chichester, where he also leads bat walks.
The Bat Conservation Trust is the leading non-governmental organisation in the United Kingdom solely devoted to the conservation of bats and the landscapes on which they rely.
